A real Roman calendar with beautiful Roman themed pictures!
It's impossible to produce a "real Roman calendar" in the sense of historical accuracy, since there never has been one. First of all, each Roman community, usually a city or a town, had it's own calendar, the deities honoured in them varied according to the local traditions. The contents of a calendar also varied from time to time. As a curious fact, we have several survived provincial calendars, or fragments of them, but none from the city of Rome itself. We have, however, information from different sources about the calendar of the city of Rome. So, we cannot talk about Roman calendar, instead we should talk about Roman calendars. This calendar is based directly on the calendar of Res Publica Romana community and thus represents the official calendar of a modern Roman community, and as such is a real Roman calendar. The calendarical information in it is based on careful work of reconstruction from both historical and archaeological fragments and survived calendars. As such it is a reconstruction of no particular Roman calendar. In many of the survived ones, however, the variation has been quite small most major festivities for example are alike in all survived sources. So, we can also claim it to be reasonably well historically accurate on the premises of the information we currently have. The choice has been made to favour republican calendars over the imperial era ones. With this in mind we hope that you enjoy your real Roman calendar!
